UNIVERSITY WISCONSIN-MILWAUKEE SUPPORT FOR UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOWS An undergraduate research project focused on 3D design and fabrication through the transformation of 2D digital designs into physical prototypes. The study combines manufacturing methods with industrial design and integrates traditional craft practices with new technologies such as 3d printing, laser cutting, and various other CNC methods. A variety of materials, including cardstock and steel, are tested to find out additional capabilities of an assortment of different shapes. Multiple prototypes were created in preparation for an exhibition.

2D | 3D | PHYSICAL PROTOTYPE

First, we start with 2D digital studies in Adobe Illustrator, then transfer the SVG file to Rhino, a computer-aided design software, and rebuild the shape in 3D form. The Rhino 3DM file is transferred to Fusion, a computer-aided manufacturing software, and programmed to cut steel on the Tormach, a CNC mill.
